How to Massage the Eye Area to Reduce Wrinkles in 1 Minute: A Famous Japanese Technique

Learn a simple Japanese-style eye massage anyone can do.

Having bright, beautiful eyes is always a dream for many women. However, over time, the skin around the eyes, like other areas, also ages and can make the face look less radiant. So, besides caring for and cherishing the “window to the soul,” the best way to help soften eye wrinkles is to “exercise” the eyes. Below, ELLE shares a Shiatsu eye massage method from Japan. Just 1 minute a day can help you maintain a youthful look around the eyes, just like Japanese women.

WHAT IS THE SHIATSU MASSAGE METHOD?

Long ago, reducing wrinkles by using the hands and fingers to knead and press sore areas helped the body feel more comfortable. Those basic movements later formed the massage therapy we know today. Shiatsu was developed by a man named Tokujiro Namikoshi. When he was young, his family moved to Hokkaido. Due to the climate, his mother suffered from body aches. Using his own hands to massage her, Tokujiro Namikoshi helped relieve her discomfort. From there, he devoted time to research and gradually developed Shiatsu, a therapeutic massage method. In Japanese, Shiatsu means pressing (atsu) with the fingers (shi).

HOW DOES SHIATSU WORK?

In Shiatsu massage, the fingers work to stimulate circulation and the body’s internal energy flow. As a result, the muscles relax more completely and the mind feels lighter and refreshed. In addition, this method may help support tissue metabolism, contributing to healthier-looking skin. For the skin around the eyes, Shiatsu has been shown to help soften wrinkles, reduce dark circles under the eyes, and improve skin elasticity.

SHIATSU EYE MASSAGE EXERCISES TO HELP SOFTEN WRINKLES

LIFTING THE EYEBROWS

This is a massage exercise that targets the inner, outer, and center areas of the eyebrows. When you do this movement, the skin around the area may feel firmer, helping reduce sagging and fine lines.

How to do it:

  • Use the index, middle, and ring fingers and place them on the eyebrows
  • Gently press on the areas above the brows
  • To shape the brow area, press while lightly pushing upward
  • Hold the movement for about 7–8 seconds

HELPING PREVENT CROW’S FEET

This eye massage exercise targets the outer corners of the eyes. After age 25, signs of aging such as crow’s feet and fine lines may begin to appear. Keep practicing this movement consistently to help maintain a youthful look.

How to do it:

  • Warm your index fingers and place them at the outer corners of the eyes
  • Press gently and release
  • Use light pressure to pull the muscles toward the temples. Hold for 1–2 seconds
  • Repeat 3 times, 2–3 seconds each time

REDUCING PUFFY EYES

Eye puffiness often happens after a long night’s sleep. This eye massage exercise targets the lower eyelids and the area near the nose.

How to do it:

  • Place your index finger at the outer corner of the eye
  • Move the finger in an inverted triangle from the outer corner toward the eye socket
  • Focus on the muscles and avoid moving the skin to help prevent sagging
  • You can also use the middle and index fingers to form a V shape. While doing so, press at the inner and outer areas of the eyes
  • Repeat 3 times, 2–3 seconds each time

SMOOTHING NASOLABIAL AND NOSE BRIDGE WRINKLES

People often focus only on wrinkles around the eyes and mouth, while overlooking the nose bridge area. The following eye massage exercise can help prevent creases along the nose bridge.

How to do it:

  • Place the index, middle, and ring fingers on three points in the area between the eyebrows
  • Apply gentle pressure to these three points
  • Repeat 3 times, about 5–7 seconds each time

REVITALIZING THE UNDER-EYE AREA

To help maintain the beauty of the “window to the soul,” this is a suitable eye massage exercise for you. The main area it may help improve is the bone area under the eyes.

How to do it:

  • Place the index, middle, and ring fingers on three points under the eyes and press gently
  • Repeat 2 times

In addition, another wrinkle-care option is an eye, nose, and lip area skin rejuvenation device, TRIPOLLAR STOP Vx.

TriPollar STOP Vx uses facial lifting technology that delivers four low-energy radio frequency beams deep into the skin to stimulate its activity. Compared with other devices in the same range, this device is designed to deliver visible results that may be noticeable right away and over time.
