About Your Treatment

Can I treat my underarms if I am using very strong antiperspirants such as Odaban?

To avoid any possible interaction, the skin should always be clean and dry before treatment. We recommend leaving at least one week between applying Odaban and using SmoothSkin products. This is because Odaban and similar products can sometimes cause skin reactions or dermatitis. If the skin is inflamed at the time of IPL treatment, there is a risk of skin burns.

Can I treat my underarms if I have applied deodorant?

No. To avoid any possible interaction, the skin should always be clean and dry.

Can I use moisturiser, deodorant, or antiperspirant after SmoothSkin treatment?

Yes, but only after treatment, not before.

Can SMOOTHSKIN be used with self-tan/tanning products, including self-tanning moisturisers?

No — do not use SmoothSkin if you are using a self-tan routine. There may be photosensitising ingredients in self-tanning moisturisers that could affect how your skin reacts to IPL.

Can SMOOTHSKIN be used before or after sun exposure (direct sunlight)?

Yes, SmoothSkin devices can be used year-round. We only ask that you take extra care during the summer months or when you are on holiday. There are a few precautions before and after sun exposure — both after sunbathing and after prolonged sun exposure — as this increases skin sensitivity (a little bit of sun on the skin from being outdoors is not a problem!).

Sun exposure before using SmoothSkin:

* Wait at least 48 hours after sun exposure before using SmoothSkin.

* Do not use SmoothSkin if your skin is sunburned and while the sunburn is still present.

* Please note that all forms of tanning darken the skin.

Sun exposure after using SmoothSkin:

* Your skin will be more sensitive immediately after treatment.

* Wait at least 24 hours or until all redness has disappeared before exposing treated areas to sunlight.

* Cover treated areas when going out in the sun or use sunscreen (SPF*50) for 48 hours after treatment.

Can SMOOTHSKIN be used on any part of the body?

Most areas of the body can be treated except for: mucous membranes (for example inside the nostrils, lips, ears, labia), directly on the genitals (including the pubic bone, perineum and scrotum, or around the vagina or anus).

We do not recommend using SmoothSkin on the face or beard area of men, or directly on the scalp. Because of the depth and thickness of this type of hair, much higher energy levels would be needed to be effective, which means SmoothSkin is unlikely to deliver the desired results. Hair density in these areas is also very high, so there is a higher risk of burns if the device is used. Closely packed hairs can act as a single mass, and the skin surface temperature may rise above the damage threshold, leading to burns.

Which product is best for me?

SmoothSkin Bare has a single energy level of 3J/cm2 and is suitable for all skin tones. It is ultra-fast and lightweight technology, so a full-body treatment takes only 10 minutes.

SmoothSkin Bare+ has a single energy level of 4J/cm2 and is suitable for all skin tones. It is ultra-fast and lightweight technology, so a full-body treatment takes only 10 minutes.

SmoothSkin Muse has 10 energy settings, ranging from 3 to 6 J/cm2, with the latest IPL technology to automatically adjust the treatment to your skin tone, providing a personalised treatment and helping you maximise your results.

  • If you want a beauty routine with longer-term results, SmoothSkin Muse is for you.
  • If you can spend a little more time for longer intervals between maintenance treatments, choose SmoothSkin Muse.

How many treatments have you completed?

Hair grows in cycles, and IPL treatment only affects hair in one of the three growth stages (known as the Anagen phase). Not all hairs are in the same stage at the same time, which is why you need to continue with your treatment plan. You may have missed a treatment, or perhaps your hair was not in the right stage.

Remember, with SmoothSkin Bare and Bare+, you can treat stubborn areas such as the underarms by going over the area several times (moving the device over the same area up to 3 times).

Can I use SMOOTHSKIN to treat female pubic hair, or for a HOLLYWOOD/BRAZILIAN treatment?

Yes, all SmoothSkin devices are safe and gentle enough to treat the entire bikini area (including the bikini line, pubic area, labia majora and perineum, to use the technical terms!). So if you want a Brazilian or Hollywood style, go right ahead — just take care to avoid treating the “inner” parts of the bikini area, including the labia minora, vagina and anus, as IPL is not suitable for these areas. If you are using SmoothSkin Muse or Gold, the gentle mode is best for treating these areas.

Do not use the device directly on mucous membranes, genitals or around the anus. These areas can be darker in skin tone and, to avoid injury, should not be treated.

Can I use SMOOTHSKIN to treat male pubic hair?

Yes. All SmoothSkin devices are suitable for use on male pubic hair. We recommend being a little more cautious when treating these areas — and using gentle mode if your device has one.

Do not use the device directly on mucous membranes, directly on the genitals (pubic bone, perineum and scrotum), or around the anus. These areas can be darker in skin tone and, to avoid injury, should not be treated.

Can I treat my eyebrows with the SMOOTHSKIN device?

No. Never attempt to use a SmoothSkin device near the eye area.

Is SMOOTHSKIN suitable for use on women’s faces?

Yes, you can safely treat the face, cheeks and jawline, upper lip, neck and chin. However, do not use on eyebrows, eyelashes, scalp, lips, nostrils or ears.

Is SMOOTHSKIN suitable for use on men’s faces?

We do not recommend using SmoothSkin on the face or beard area of men. Because of the depth and thickness of this type of hair, much higher energy levels would be needed to be effective, which means SmoothSkin is unlikely to deliver the desired results. Hair density on men’s faces is also very high, so there is a risk of burns if the device is used.

Can I use SMOOTHSKIN while bathing?

No. Do not use near baths, showers, sinks or any containers holding water. If your SmoothSkin device becomes wet, it should not be used. Do not use if the device has come into contact with water.

What is the difference between SMOOTHSKIN MUSE and SMOOTHSKIN BARE/BARE+?

SmoothSkin Muse uses the latest IPL technology to provide a treatment tailored to you and help maximise results. With 10 energy settings, ranging from 3 to 6 J/cm2, Muse scans your skin before each flash to automatically adjust to your skin tone so you can extend the time between maintenance treatments. We recommend starting with SmoothSkin Muse once a week for 12 weeks, then continuing with maintenance treatments every 4–8 weeks.

SmoothSkin Bare is extremely fast, with a single energy level of 3J/cm2 suitable for all skin tones. It is ultra-fast and lightweight technology, so a full-body treatment takes only 10 minutes. We recommend starting with SmoothSkin Bare once a week for 12 weeks, then continuing with maintenance treatments about every 2 weeks.

SmoothSkin Bare+ is also extremely fast, with a slightly higher single energy level of 4J/cm2.

Why do we recommend shaving before treatment rather than other hair removal methods?

To make IPL work effectively, you must remove any hair above the skin surface before each treatment, while leaving the root in place so the device can target the follicle for maximum effectiveness — and therefore maximum results.

Do I need to shave my face?

Ideally, yes. We understand that shaving the face can be uncomfortable for women, but shaving does give the best results. If you are not comfortable shaving facial hair (or other sensitive areas!), we recommend trimming the hair as close to the skin as possible before treatment. To do this, you could try cosmetic scissors, an electric trimmer or depilatory strips. Alternatively, you may wax or pluck.

That said, remember that for the best results, we really do recommend shaving. It can feel a little daunting at first, but it works well in the long term!

Can I remove hair between treatments?

Of course! For best treatment results, we recommend shaving, but you can also wax or pluck any troublesome hairs if you prefer.

Why do I need to shave first?

To make IPL work effectively, you must remove any hair above the skin surface before each treatment, ideally leaving the root intact.

For best results, we recommend shaving, but you can also wax or pluck. Do not use depilatory creams, to avoid a reaction with IPL treatment.

How often do I need to use my SMOOTHSKIN device?

It is important to follow the recommended treatment plan to get the maximum results from your SmoothSkin device.

For SmoothSkin Muse, For Men and Gold:

We recommend starting with one treatment per week for 12 weeks, then continuing with maintenance treatments as needed, typically every 4–8 weeks to help manage hair regrowth.

For SmoothSkin Bare and Bare+:

We recommend treating once a week until you achieve your desired results, then continuing with maintenance treatments as needed, about every 2 weeks, simply to help manage hair regrowth.

Do I need to use gel?

No, do not use gel. Gel is only necessary for older IPL technologies and will only clog the flash window and damage your device.

Will I see results faster if I use SMOOTHSKIN twice a week?

No — we recommend not using it more than once per week. This will not give any extra benefit and may only irritate your skin.

However, remember that with SmoothSkin Bare and Bare+, you can treat stubborn areas such as the underarms by going over the area several times (moving the device over the same area up to 3 times).
